The Tsum Valley ("Tsum" means "vivid" in Tibetan) is a deeply sacred pilgrimage region tucked along the Tibetan border above the Budi Gandaki river. Opened to trekkers only in 2008, it remains one of Nepal's most pristine destinations: ancient gompas perched on ridges, Bon-influenced villages, and the high monastery of Mu Gompa (3,700 m) in a setting of extraordinary spiritual beauty.

- Licensed guide mandatory — solo trekking is not permitted in the restricted zone.
- Best seasons: March–May and October–November.
- Tsum Valley opened to trekkers only in 2008 and remains one of Nepal's least-visited destinations — expect genuine solitude and authentic Tibetan-Buddhist culture.
- Fitness: the trek is long but the maximum altitude is a modest 3,700 m, so altitude risk is lower than on Everest or Manaslu routes. Be ready for 5–7 hours a day on consecutive days through a long, remote river gorge.
- Remoteness: mobile signal is patchy and there are no ATMs beyond the road head — carry enough Nepali rupees in cash. Teahouses in upper Tsum are simple, so a sleeping-bag liner and water purification are recommended.
- Comprehensive travel insurance including emergency helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended.

Why is the Tsum Valley restricted?
The Tsum Valley is a culturally and ecologically sensitive area with deep Tibetan-Buddhist traditions. The restricted area permit limits visitor numbers, preserving its authenticity and protecting the unique culture of the Tsumpa people. Your permit fee supports community conservation.
What makes Tsum Valley different from other treks?
Tsum feels genuinely untouched. The monasteries here — including the ancient Mu Gompa and Rachen Nunnery — are active centres of Tibetan Buddhism, not tourist attractions. The landscape is dramatic and the culture unhurried. You may be the only trekkers in the valley.
What about altitude sickness?
The highest point is Mu Gompa at 3,700 m — a modest altitude reached gradually over many days. Altitude sickness risk is low compared to Everest or Manaslu treks. Consult your doctor and report any symptoms immediately.
What gear do I need?
Comfortable trekking boots, layers for cool nights, waterproof shell, trekking poles, and sun protection. The approach through the Budi Gandaki gorge is warm and humid — breathable clothing matters. A full kit list is provided on booking.
What are the teahouses like?
Very simple in the upper Tsum valley — basic twin rooms and shared facilities. Cleanliness varies. Bring a sleeping bag liner and treat water or carry iodine tablets. The remoteness is part of the experience.
